My friend JoAnn has been helping me out by giving me her awesome recipes for years. This one is one from her family’s ‘Personal Favorites’ file, I think it will become your favorite too!
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy (I use candy canes) 1/2 cup sugar
Step by Step
Preheat oven to 375 1) Thoroughly mix butter, shortening, confectioners’ sugar, egg and flavorings together. 2) Blend in flour and salt. 3) Divide dough in half, and add food color to one half, blending well. 4) Shape 1 teaspoon of dough from each half into a four inch rope, by rolling the dough back and forth on a lightly floured surface. 5) Place ropes side by side, press together lightly and twist to form candy cane. 6) Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet, curving the top down to form the handle of the cane. 7) Bake about 9 minutes, or until set and lightly golden brown. 9) Sprinkle cookies with candy mixture as soon as you remove them from the oven. 10) Then remove from baking sheet to a rack to cool completely. 11) Serve and Enjoy!Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
